This is what happens when you have a 13 hour print go bad…no I can’t sit and stare at it all 13 hours and at some point I did have to stop checking on it and go to bed. I should’ve stayed awake instead…
Been there! Get the nozzle to pla softening temp and work it loose
Get some glass for the heated bed and use a bit of hairspray on the glass. Print will not come off while hot.
Yeah and hopefully the z probe will work then. This is one reason I don’t like Z probes…it’s either that or stop using tape…yuck. the annoying part is a wire is trapped in there…aaargh.
@Samer_Najia Do you know the cause? Almost looks like the nozzle plugged and then… herniated.
@Samer_Najia right, the inductive probe is the limiting factor with that. Always something!
Grumble grumble…I don’t want to use slurry and tape and glue stick was working for a while but now I’m going to have to use Aquanet right on the metal surface. Oh and this is a Printrbot Plus with a 250mmx250mm bed. This is the second time it does this and it does this with anything that resembles a larger (meaning anything more than 3-4") flat surface. No amount of Brim or Raft helps. I sometimes suspect the ABS, but really it’s stuff like this that makes me like PLA more and more. Grumble grumble grumble.
Very simply the ABS is warping up and taking the blue tape with it. You can see the rest.
@Jeff_Parish No, this isn’t the first time. What happens is that this is, or was, a flat piece from the 3Dtje printer on Thingiverse. It happened with a similarly large flat part before and back then I just heated the nozzle to 230C and pried off the blob. This is way worse. In this case, I will remove the heated plastic, but I might also replace the hot end (since I do happen to have a replacement). What I think happened is the part delaminated, got wrapped up around the nozzle, which continued to keep it soft and then yanked the rest of it off the build plate, wrapping it around as it went. This is the ONLY printer that does this. No other has this problem with any part including parts like this.
@Samer_Najia TIP: If you want to keep using tape with your Z probe I have found that washing the bed with Windex before applying the tape helps it stick really well. Make sure the bed is clean and smooth. On my most recent bed prep I’ve had no lifting or peeling up after 400+ hours of printing with a bed temp up to 60C.
@Jeff_Parish 60C with ABS or PLA? I know Windex roughens up the tape, hence the better adhesion. In this case, my tape was ‘seasoned’ by other applications of glue stick in the middle sections. This is why the tape is shredded in the middle but is peeled off on the edges. If all else fails I will blame the ABS…LOL.
@raykholo exactly. PLA! PLA! PLA! Rah Rah Rah!
Also with the difference this has made for me with PLA I suspect you will see a similar effect at higher temperatures using ABS although I have not tried it with Bed temps of 95C yet.
@Jeff_Parish at this point I will try anything. This printer’s strength is its print bed size. If I can’t fully utilize it, it is no better than any of the others I have. Thanks for the tip.
I use PLA most of the time. Plenty strong for what I print and much easier to deal with in every way.
So there is no misunderstanding don’t put the Windex on the tape or put the tape down with the bed wet with it. The clean bed allows the tape to adhere to it very well.
…but, if we are blaming ABS then all bets are off if this will help.
I will give it a whirl. But yeah, I think I will be switching to PLA exclusively soon just because it is far easier to work with and my wife doesn’t complain about its smell.
After I had one like that I pointed a IP camera at my printer and got an IP power switch. I monitor long prints from my phone and such down remotely when things go bad
@Blaine_Lefebvre Great work around. Can you share details on your system?
I’ve been testing a Raspberry PI system running Octopi over the last week that has a camera providing live feed and allows me to start, pause, or shut down the printer remotely. Some buddies and I are working on a system to automatically detect problems and pause the printer then home XY and fire off an alert to let you know. We have a ways to go…
@Jeff_Parish mine is just a D-Link up camera and a Belkin (I think) remote power line switch. Nothing automated. I just check on my prints once in a while if I’m out and kill it if it looks like something has gone terribly wrong
Was that a poem?
PEI next?
