This one looks serious…

Smart Dolls are awesome. Been following these for a while. They are have this really neat armature (as opposed to standard ball joints).
I just can’t justify spending a few hundred bucks on one at the moment:-)
Their manufacturing techniques are awesome. All that electroplating, casting, etc. Fantastic.
I picked up a smart doll in Japan when I visited, got to tour their shop and workspace. It’s an awesome doll and an awesome company.
@James Which one did you get? I’m jealous:-)))

I’m planning on designing some 3d printable accessories for the smartdolls
So they are just regular ball joint dolls but they are working on one with servos. Well I guess Ochiai will get his killer doll soon enough…
They are ball joint like; unlike resin dolls, which are more solid and articulate on tension-ed elastic cords, Smart Dolls are vinyl body parts on a plastic skeleton: http://shop.smartdoll.jp/products/mirai-frame This allows the doll to be a bit more posable in many ways, but has limitations in others (the knees cannot bend past 90~95 degrees).
I’m also keen to toss some servos into the dolls to try and get them self articulating. This is an April first post, but I know it’s something he’s keen on actually doing: http://www.dannychoo.com/en/post/27287/Smart+Doll+Plus.html
They are a really novel design and oddly enough, because of their difference (I think the armature and they are made from vinyl and not resin) from “standard” BJDs some of the online BJD communities consider them “off-topic”.
I think they are great and beyond being very pretty, the fact that the design process is publicly detailed makes it’s very interesting to a range of people - not just dolly people.
I’d talked myself out of wanting one - now I do again:-)
Yeah, I am definitely not a purist, but I can understand some of the concerns of BJD owners: the vinyl material handles differently compared to resin when it comes to doing body blushing (art of making the monotone plastic color look like skin tones), and it’s a different process all together in terms of taking apart the doll. That said, still love it.
This might be worth showing my wife.
IRL Anime. That’s incredible.
Incredible! I would love to make many of my designs 3D. This simply amazes me!
