Time to start making a mess, in the cleanest way possible. Dust extraction system thrown together using 3" pvc, connects back to my shopvac. Also working on rearranging my workshop for a better flow. Last pic is of my full power shutoff for all the equipment. It’s up high and lockable, to keep the kids from doing something bad.
Nice shelving/ racks. I’m consistently out of desk space with all my machines. And I don’t vent anything nearly well enough.
That’s a really nice setup. Glad to see you got something milled. I’m currently making a nice mess of acrylic shavings. Wish I had that dust extraction system.
Should we really use PVC pipes for dust collection systems ? Aren’t they prone to friction generated static electricity ?
@Jeremie_Tarot I’m going to install a grounding wire
@Daniel_Chote OK
Will it avoid chips to stick to the walls or only mitigate discharge risks ?
@Jeremie_Tarot there seem to be a lot of people (according to my google searches) that don’t have any problems with their pvc setup at all. I’m guessing it’ll be fine.
@Daniel_Chote indeed my YT playlist and pinterest board on this matter are full of these and I too am planning to use them in my workshop ! That’s why I said “we”
Your post just raised this question and wanted to chat about it.
How will you connect your ground wire ? Ring terminal with a screw through the wall ? What wire gauge do you plan to use ?
Out of interest, you are in the US of A? so I assume that’s a basement under your house? Here in Australia most workshops are freestanding sheds, it interested me when we traveled Europe and South America this year how so many people don’t have a shed or similar. I couldn’t do with out a space to play in and store toys, else whats life work and sleep? Apartment life not for me.
@Jeremie_Tarot Copper foil tape would be the way to go if you consider it an issue. $14.90 usd for 1/4 x 36 yards at amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Copper-Conductive-Adhesive-4inch-36yards/dp/B01CH4LYZ6
@Mat_Helm what is “it”? Anyway, thank you for the pointer, bookmarked !
BTW, should the ground wire be connected to each and every piece of pipe ? In which case conductive tape suggested by @Mat_Helm is surely the cleanest and fastest way to go !
@Jeremie_Tarot “It” is static build up. And a ground on a non conductive material would need to be run the length of the pipe to be of any use. In fact you’d most likely need to wrap it in a coil like fashion to have any real effect on a static charge. And I’m not sure it would work even then as far as stopping static material build up. I mean that’s the reason you use 3" and 4 inch pipe…
One of the better guides I saw, they recommend drilling in to each joint and securing a screw or bolt that protrudes into the duct. Each of these screws are wired together to ground. It’s the dust that build the charge, not the pvc. They also recommended a decent gauge wire, as a discharge can blow out lighter gauge wire.
@Paul_Shaw yup, I’m in the US of A. I was born in New Zealand though. I sure do love my basement.
@Daniel_Chote you in the town from that beer sign. As i was born in Nelson now living near Pats / Genos
I’m near State College, PA. I’m greatly enjoying the surge of Pennsylvania breweries across the state
I was born in Nelson too
@Paul_Shaw you in the USA as well ?
I saw your pictures and spent my whole day cleaning my shop. I’ll never get it pristine like yours though. (Too old and dusty). Must be a great place to work. Thanks for all the cool posts.
