I’m having trouble connecting to Repetier, I can easily communicate with the SD card and I can connect and print with Cura. I’ve have the settings correct in Repetier but I get this message.
(access to port com8 is denied)

We generally don’t support Repetier as it’s not Open-Source.
However, I hear it generally tends to work with Smoothie.
Could you check if it works with Pronterface ?

Have you set “reset on connect” to “Due native port”. I think smoothie board behaves the same as due native port, which need dtr pin high for active communication (while the other types use it for resetting the board).
