Trying a new print technique using a .8 nozzle and .3 mm layer height.

Trying a new print technique using a .8 nozzle and .3 mm layer height. Looking to get stronger layer adhesion with larger ABS prints. I’m not getting the wider extrusion or layer bonding with the infill portion. Has anyone tried this ? I’m using an E3D V5.5, Slic3r 1.21 and 3mm ABS.

What’s the extrusion width?

I had been using the defaults that slic3r generates but I’m now trying 150% of nozzle as per manual suggestions in the advanced settings. Now looking at the second layer I think that is going to be the solution !

Great!
I am new to slic3r, what’s the default ew setting?

A smidge higher extrusion temp can help layer adhesion as well.

@Ivan_Hoe From what I’ve read in the excellent manual it is dynamically set based on where it is extruding… thinner at external perimeters, nozzle diameter at bridges, and some value relative to layer height depending on speed/flow and whether it is infill or topfill etc… All these can be tuned in the advanced settings of the print tab.

+William Frick, seems slic3r’s dynamically set extrusion is useful.

@Ivan_Hoe I am not familiar with other slicers and how they do it. The manual here http://manual.slic3r.org/advanced/flow-math explains it better. @nophead has also explained the math of extrusion and why some errors around small holes occur as well as infill not completely filling corners etc… Worth a read if you really want to understand it. For me it is a resource to solve odd issues. There does not a single Goldilocks setting for every thing one may want to print.

+William Frick, thank you for providing the manual link. I will spend time reading and understanding it.

@Ivan_Hoe You might also want to check out @Richard_Horne 's blog/tutorial on perimeter extrusion width optimizing. Found it since this original post and it really helped me get a handle on this.

@William_Frick , thank you. I’ll check it out.
