Trying to get the old xtion asus scanner running to scan small objects on

Trying to get the old xtion asus scanner running to scan small objects on a turntable in a light box. the hardware is recognized and feeds camera data to the software. However it goes instantly to the error of not being able to track. Before any movement has even occurred. Both Reconstruct me and scanect, complain that it’s lost tracking. Errors are things like “go back to last pose” “tracking position lost” “moved too fast or not enough geometry” I tried a small shot glass, a cube, and a small sculpy dragon. also, we do have 2 3d printers, I’m hoping to set up for scan and print ability.

You probably have 2 issues.

  1. The scanner can’t have both fixed geometry and moving at the same time (the soft box, table and turntable not moving the same). your probably better of trying to move the scanner around the object.

  2. The scanner you have is not very great at small objects, Its better of for full body scans, a head scan I would say is the smallest I would recommend.

Now I you have tracking problem try add geometry (that scanner need a lot!) throw in a crinkled up newspaper or a towel.

And the soft box is not necessary, in fact to much light will over power the ir led projector that the scanner sends out.

Thank you Markus, your suggestions seem to explain the problem indeed. This means this scanner simply doesn’t do what I need because rarely will i want to scan something so large. I want to be able to scan broken parts, fix and 3d print as well as create with real-world scans of things like flowers or insects. Even a tea pot was too small for this blighted POS.

To 3d scan a mechanical part good enough to 3d print a working copy your looking at the +60 000$ scanner, especially if you need parts that small… I can’t think of a scanner capable of scanning a insect of my head.
Sorry to sound negative but consumer 3d scanning is not there yet…

@Markus_Granberg I hear you, I was hoping for a different response of course but I suspected as much. That being said, there’s a lot going on with phone cameras and the solution might be only weeks away from the market. Someone out there is surely studying the problem, eh?
