Update from my Prusa i3 question about extruders.
I decided to go with this modified wades extruder:
I will also be testing / designing a compact direct drive extruder once the machine is working.

I’ve been trying to redesign the Greg’s Wade extruder reloaded so the motor is level like Misan’s design here (plus a couple of changes). The slanted motor drives me absolutely nuts!
I thought the slanted motor made it so you could access the last stepper screw through the big gear instead of having to take the big gear off. Of course that depends on the angle of the stepper with respect to the hobbed bolt as well.
I know that’s the reason. But it can be accomplished as well by moving the motor upward without slanting it, which Misan’s design proves. I won’t be using his because as my X axis is horizontal rather than vertical, I don’t need the motor to be so much higher.
Here’s what I was talking about: https://plus.google.com/117324667497119008450/posts/bN2bRrpfNKq
Gotcha, hard to see without the gear. Nice comparison. That’s why I had a CYA in there “Of course that depends on the angle of the stepper with respect to the hobbed bolt as well.” :]
@Normand_Chamberland Are these models draw in @FreeCAD Would you mind sharing?
@Daniel_Wood All my models are done in FreeCAD
I’m planning to put the files either on Github or @Cubehero which almost amounts to the same thing (I think).
But the extruder is a long way from being finished.
