Upgraded the spool holder on my E3D BigBox so that it can take the 2.3 kg spool of Edge filament.
How do you like the printer?
very good
@Adam_Steinmark It’s taken a while to get it tuned to my satisfaction, but some recent mods like moving the Z sensor from the print head to the build platform, and adding dual extrusion have made this a worthy successor to my faithful old Mendel90 (which is still churning out beautiful prints).
@Richard_Gain how does it level the bed if it’s attached to it? Do you have the nozzle hit multiple endstops? And the dual extrusion upgrade wasn’t their dual extrusion model?
Dual extrusion is much more reliable if you use manual bed levelling rather than automatic bed levelling. I bought the Dual Titan Hybrid upgrade kit and used Alex’s version of the firmware.
So you use the bed leveling screws?
No, the firmware is programmed with a matrix of 9 positions and you use a piece of paper to set the nozzle height at each position and then store the results. There is also a Bed-Z adjustment setting that allows you to fine-tune the first layer in real time as it prints.
I’m familiar with the process but typically to set the nozzle height with paper you would tighten the bed leveling screws until the paper can be moved but minimal friction is felt. If there are no bed leveling screws how do you adjust the nozzle height?
You turn the knob on the LCD screen at each position and then push the button to store the setting and move to the next position.
Oh so it minutely adjusts the Z height of the nozzle at each point. Seems simple enough. How would you rate the reliability of the printer? Would you say its best for tinkering or is it possible to use it commercially?
It’s a production machine. All of the BigBox kits are made on BigBox printers. For me, the main difficulty was getting the Z-height sensor to give consistent results regardless of the print surface coating. Fixing this has now cleared the way for a ramp up in productivity.
I’m interested in this printer for commercial reasons. I have a machine I use for tinkering but I need something that can reliably print dual color models without much attention. I was going to but the Big Box Dual for personal use but if it’s really that reliable and cheap I may get it for commercial use as well. Other options I’m considering are the BCN3D Sigma or the Flashforge Creator Pro.
