well I had a major delay in building my ledtable. It took over 3 months to receive my lpd8806 ledstrip from china. The past days I did all the soldering. Oooh boy that was a lot of work. Here are some pictures…

Oh gawd you cut the strips into 2-LED sections and soldered more wire in for length? Holy crap what a pain in the balls. I’m not seeing any wired lpd8806 pixels on Ray Wu’s store either, there are heaps of ws2812 ones.

hi Robert, yes it was a pain in the ass  but really worth it for having squares that are ±1cm larger. I wanted rather big pixels and 32pix/meter was the less “dens” strip that I could find, so I ended up cutting them lol. I chose the LPD8806 strip because it uses a clock and a data line what make it easier to work with a raspberry pi. I opted for separate (with no wire) ws2811 pixels but the I had to solder 6 connections/led and with the LPD8806 strip only 4 connections/leds. I bought my ledstrip here

For “next time” (ha!) something like this might be easier: http://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Programmable-SMD5050-Pixel-LED-Module-LPD8806IC_1328471631.html

(I searched Alibaba for “lpd8806 pixel string”. Note that these are 12V and 3x 5050LEDs per pixel so they’re going to be much brighter, though you can now easily fix that in software with FastLED.)
