Well if you live in Naples,

Well if you live in Naples, FL and have a DaVinci 3D printer or other XYZ printer you can now get 1.75mm PLA at Barnes&Nobal. Just saw a bunch of blk + yellow filament there.
It was like $29 for 1/2 kb.

Is that a half a kilobyte, half a kilogram or half a pound? That particular typo has plenty of confusion built in. Ah, their web site says 600 grams, so I’ll guess a half a kilo approximately. Good news too, it’s suitable for age eight and up. Okay, sure, I’ll buy that.

Meanwhile, we can get a full kilo of PLA from Microcenter for $15.

I would invest in making one of the encoder devices with an arduino and get the PLA from Microcenter like @raykholo said

@Fred_U sorry *kg.
Yeah I get my 1kg spools of PLA from UltiBots.com for about the same price.

So why not just do a little modifying of your printer and replace its controller board with something like a Smoothieboard? You could disable all the unnecessary filament chip sensors and such. Im sure you could also get it to print better then as well.
