Well the horse is back up and running.

Well the horse is back up and running. The freshly printed parts are to replace the extruder tension block to eliminate the old fan holder. They came out perfect and snapped together just fine.

Story:
I had swapped the kevlar line out for the GT2 belt. I had already extended the X-axis using these parts:

As luck would have it, someone posted a remix to support GT2 belts with these parts:

Lessons learned:
The face plate print that holds the pulley has to be spot on, no over extrusion, etc. cause the tolerances are tight when inserting into the Simple’s frame. Fortunately I got this right cause it’d be a nightmare to have to go back and reassemble to print again.

Don’t be like me and install the plate to only then realize the pulley and bearings can’t be installed. Place them on the mounting plate before installing into the PB frame.

Thread the belt through before installing the plate as well. What a PIA to feed through otherwise.

Use left over 5mm screws from bed extension job to hold down the bearings.

I had to drill a new hole in the metal brace to hold the end brackets because the new parts have holes that are slightly off from the original parts.

Sand about 1/16" off the inside edge of the lower print bed cause it’ll otherwise rub against the pulley.

Question for everyone- what should the tension be like for the belt? I originally had it pulled pretty tight but now it I’ve loosened it a little so that it’ll have some minor deflection.

How well was the bed extension working with a fish line?

I had issues with the line cause I tried using a paracord. It would last an hour or so and then start slipping. I ended up taking the original line and adding paracord to one end to extend it and use it again. The bed extension used a spring for tension, but it was held in place by a screw on the other end, and that would slip every so often.

So if you’re going to extend the bed then I’d do the belt upgrade as well.

Thanks, I’ll put that on my ever extending todo and wish list when I have spare change in my Paypal account

Hi Tim,

Just received my parts to do this mods. I also printed a few sets of the Thingiverse parts so I’m ready to do this mod…

The rods I have are 18" long. Think the belt could handle such a long platform ? Is so my X print area will be something like 430mm…

It should be fine cause mine is 14" right now with an 11" print bed.

Cool can’t wait for the kids to go to bed to work on that !
