We’re currently testing out ways to spool 1lb coils of PLA without an actual spool, just coil. I was wondering if anyone here had any experience with any type of arduino setup that could do this automatically with a motor? Any guides/tutorials out there? Doesn’t necessarily have to be arduino.

Something like this might work:
though you don’t need the laser sensor. Then use laser cut spools so you can disassemble them and be left with a coil once spooling is done.
Look for coil winder videos on youtube and industrial listings on alibaba for ideas. Advanced winders add just the right amount of twist to the line as it is wound to provide neutral tension when despooled.
These folks seem to have the spool-less dispensing problem solved.
No tangles twists, etc. Brittle filament might not work, but everything else should.
