What do you guys think of turning my DaVinci 2.0 into a laser engraver/cutter.

What do you guys think of turning my DaVinci 2.0 into a laser engraver/cutter. Already have a solid enclosure, can install venting fans in the side handle cavities, freeze the Z axis and mount a good 5W laser…

Doesn’t it have a lot of flammable plastic parts inside it?

The walls are plastic, floor is sheet metal , plus I would install a metal plate as the table.

Always have to plan for laser reflections and workpiece ignition, particularly if you don’t have proper air assist.

Lots of people around here do super dumb stuff with lasers, but my personal opinion is that nothing in line of sight of the gantry or table should be flammable or alive.

5w laser is not much especially if you want to cut not only engrave. But few things are really important. You need to install a filter on all transparent windows in the frame as reflection from 5w laser is enough for permanent eye damage. You need to actively remove the smoke as it degrade the beam significant. You need to focus the beam precisely which is really hard thing and you need protective googles. You also need to ensure same speed in all engraving movements.
