What do you guys use for power I was looking into a modified power supply for computer is that a good idea?

I have had very good luck with these power supplies:
12volt:

5volt:

Ok cool all order one of those but in the meantime do you think it’s a good idea to make a little power supply? they seem pretty straight forward to make but I don’t know if I’ll run into problems lol

Some PC power supplies work great. Some have issues pushing past a couple AMPs on the 5v rail unless there is a load on the 12v rail. And this makes it easy to use https://www.sparkfun.com/products/9558

I use computer power supplies for my installations at home, or those that Michael linked.

Making your own linear power supply is fairly easy, depending on your skill level. However, size, weight and efficiency issues become significant at higher output levels. Hence switched mode power supplies.

Unless you are a serious analogue power engineer, just buy one off the shelf.

I use ATX power supplies with these open source adapters:

And I have had no trouble pulling all the power from one rail and nothing from the others. It might be a problem for older power supplies, but anything built in the last 5yrs or so should not have a problem with imbalanced outputs.

I have an 800W ATX delivering 80% output to just the 5v and not a ripple in the output. Plus you get some other useful rail voltages too. Very cost effective solution.

I built my own adapters with either a much larger fuse, or none at all because I pull so much out of them. I also break out other signals, like the 5VSB, POWER_ON, and POWER_OK. That way I can use an Arduino to control it as well. All my home installations are like that, one controller on the 5VSB rail and I use programming to turn the PSU on when I need it. Great for turn on/off displays at specific times of the day using an RTC.

For the high-power project I’m working on now (120 watts of LEDs?) I’m using an upcycled xbox 360 power supply.

It’s basically a PC power supply, but in a nicer ‘external’ enclosure.
