what is a better tablet to use for testing wifi and bluetooth based effects

what is a better tablet to use for testing wifi and bluetooth based effects with fastled? i have a transformer prime that i can use but i see a lot of ipads and i dont really know if i want to go there haha

It really depends on what’s supported. Re: TouchOSC under android, I’ve heard some complaints isn’t as good as it’s iOS counterpart, but I haven’t tried using it yet. Sadly, on both platforms, TouchOSC is wifi only, no support for bluetooth LE.

As for bluetooth LE - i’ve been using the adafruit nrf8001 breakout board for experimenting. With android, you need to double check whether or not your device supports bluetooth LE - it’s a recent addition, both in terms of hardware and in terms of android support as well.

I haven’t done any investigation into the current state of using android on, say, my Nexus 7 (2013), since at the moment the iOS apps I have access to do fantastically well.

ok that makes a lot of sence i didnt know about bluetooth le maybe thats part of my problems

i know my transformer has 4.0 but idk if my hc-05 supports it that may be a lot of my problem but all my devices have 4.0

You need at least android 4.3 and a device with supported hardware - at least to use bluetooth LE. I haven’t looked into using normal bluetooth at all yet - perhaps someone else can pipe up.

ok so i have 4.3 i have bluetooth 4.0 but now i just need to reserch if the hc-05 board will accept the 4.0

@Daniel_Garcia I’ve been wanting to do some playing from iOS. What app(s) do you recommend for iOS?

Right now, the bulk of the control work that I am doing is using touchosc over wifi. The btle stuff so far has just been experimenting with adafruits btle terminal app.

how are you hooking up to wifi? network sheild of some sort?

I’m using a digix, which has a wifi shield built in.

oh cool ill have to look at that thanx

crap that thing is awesome did you back it? or is it available?

found it pretty impressive

I did back it, but the digix should be widely available now. When I get my osc related stuff cleaned up ill write up a post on using FastLED and osc on the digix.

It is available.

Is see the that the DigiX has a clock on it does it have a battery backup for it? Has any one started playing with the Intel Galileo?

I haven’t played with the clock on the Digix yet, so far I’ve been focusing on the wifi and getting parallel pin output working.

Galileo is on my list of platforms to look at, but I think the beagle bone black is going to be my first major platform shift (don’t worry, stm32 is still on the list as well - that should be pretty minor, I hope)
