What is the purpose of PTFE tube in hotend ?

Is it a must, does any one successful in using hotend without PTFE tube, but only with hotend metal barrel

The PTFE part is historically there to prevent the half-molten filament from sticking to the sides of the hotend; it also acts as a seal for the fully-molten plastic.
All-metal hotends, like the E3D, use a different design concept with a tighter grasp on thermals, so the PTFE liner is not needed anymore.

I have designed my own hotend, based on jhotend. and testing it currently. I couldn’t get PTFE tube here locally. So I made the ID of barrel to 2mm, so I will be able to use 1.75mm filament,

Initial testing I done using gas flame to heat the time of hot end. When I pulled the filament back the 2mm hole got closed.

Any Idea how to improve the design. without PTFE tube. as I said I am not getting it in my location.

I thinks I got it working, I reheated the hotend and again, inserted the filament and pushed. After heating it went smoothly. - Its extruding now.

Will the jhoted work fine without PTFE? or any issue will come in future.,

What is the preferred metal type for barrel SS or Brass- I am using brass now.

You can get ptfe tubes on ebay.

@Jesper_Krog_Poulsen not on ebay India - you’d have to work through the US site and check each offer for whether they ship to India.

Not in India? I got mine from a chinese vendor that ships worldwide. Took some weeks to arrive, though. My extruder design didn’t work, though, so I ended up buying an e3d. But that is a different story :slight_smile:

@Thomas_Sanladerer - If I buy from US the total cost of the product + shipping + custom goes very high which is beyond my budget.

Example I brought printrbot simple which was the lowest price printer at that time final cost came near 750USD.

I was saying eBay US since that lets you list international vendors (left column after a search). The Chinese folks usually give you free shipping while beating the base price (not including shipping) of US or European vendors.

Most chinese vendors on ebay has free shipping, which is why shipping takes so long.

I use 3mm filament, while I gather from your post that you use 1.75. Search for “ptfe reprap” on http://ebay.com
