What machine is this?

What machine is this? Platform swings side to side in an arc and the extruder extends out and up. Really weird. As seen on the Smoothie Kickstarter video at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/logxen/smoothieboard-the-future-of-cnc-motion-control

Ya, that is some strange movement. How does that thing even work?!

Found it, it’s called the Feather https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vkJehKwK3w

Neat, also sounds pretty wicked

Polar coordinate system, interesting.

It does work. This concept was one of the initial designs I tried with Reprap Morgan, but I abandoned it because of the fact that the momentum of the table changes with build size, and the system footprint increases dramatically with a swinging printbed.

Nice to see somebody else actually got something similar going.
If you think about it, it is only a rehash of the polar bot.

… And never say never!
Q

@Quentin_Harley I was surprised to see the hand printing so well considering how fast the bed was moving. I have my y and z stage coupled to my bed my prints turn to crap at those speeds. Just testament to the rigidity of that design I suppose

@Eric_Moy Yes. I love the way they implemented it. My prototype was no where close to the refinement they achieved.

Another one for the ACL (anti cartesian league)
