What will be a average price for a quality 3D printer
Short answer $600-$3000. Long answer: Huge range depending on your requirements. Does it need to be open source? Do you want it plug and play or a kit? Do you want the ability to upgrade? Single color okay or multicolor? FDM/FFF, SLA or Laser Sintering? So many other questions.

Printrbot Play at $400 prints amazing! Not a big build size but still. Amazing.
Lulzbot, Ultimaker, Type A, SeeMeCNC - These are a few of my favorite things 
It’s good that you’re looking for a good machine and not simply the cheapest. But there are terrible expensive machines too.
A lot of places are pretty bad on returns and customer support so especially watch out for startups or newer companies that have the flash but no power if your new. Then again, for the strong willed, most of these machines are the same hardware and software just with different configurations and qualities of materials - Making DIY something you should put on your list, imho.
