What’s the current status on the various Thingiverse Alternatives?
Is any of them emerging as a prefered site or any reaching a similar stability and feature set as Thingiverse?
There where quite a few such projects jumping into existance when Makerbot Industries turned Closed Source a while ago.
What projects have been abandoned and what projects did mature?
I have switched to http://youmagine.com as default. But will ultimately host the files myself and hope for a torrent like solution. Because a decentralized solution is better in times of cease and desist, patent trolls and NSA.
Interesting, I’d not heard of alternatives. I’ll have to check that out. +Jan Wildeboer where do you host your own? I probably should get around to make a section on my site to host mine…
The self hosted solution exists, is git compatible, help push it on. @Thing_Tracker_Networ
@Howard_C_Shaw_III Absolutely! Whilst I am working away at a Thing Tracker Client, there is no reason people couldn’t roll their own compatible solution - that is indeed the whole point of the Network.
Throw the content on a host, or on github pages, together with a TTN JSON document, and it will be readable by the client (and other participants of the network).
I’m also hoping to add in the option to be able to create the tracker in the client lcoally and then have the option to upload it to a host/github/etc to act as a relay, as I realise most people don’t have their PCs on 24/7.
@Marcus_Wolschon I think there are now a few acceptable alternatives around, as Jan says, http://youmagine.com is the most Thingiverse -like I think. https://cubehero.com and http://shapedo.com would be worth looking at too. And http://www.bld3r.com has already added thingtracker support.
Haven’t gotten around to posting any of my recent stuff, but I’m planning to go to youmagine.
My buddy Matt and I are actively maintaining http://www.bld3r.com . We built it as an independent (i.e., it’s just the two of us, and we don’t sell printers) alternative to Thingiverse. We designed the site so that you could choose to host files on our site or link to them from other repositories, your own website, git, or torrents. We want you to have complete control over your designs, sharing what you want and how you want. We’re excited that more and more people are joining everyday. Hope you don’t think we are horrible.
I guess I’ll give youmagine a try.
