What’s your thoughts on makerbot

Overwhelmingly negative.

…there are specifics beyond that, but that’s a pretty good summary.

@Stephen_Baird why?

Overbearingly negative.

The Replicator 2 was a pretty good machine back in the day, but there’s no way you should touch anything from MakerBot since stratasys took them over. Especially anything that’s Gen 5 - nothing but a shitload of problems with their hardware. Terrible support.

Seriously, whatever you do, do NOT get a MakerBot.

Get an Ultimaker2, Get one of the larger pre-assembled Printrbots, shit – get 2 or 3 or 6 them for the same price as a single MakerBot!

Have you guys seen the documentary called “print the legend” on Netflix?? I just watched it I totally agree with you guys

Yeah, their printers aren’t good either. Most of the open source community doesn’t like Makerbot for several reasons. The primary reason is that they went closed source after they were the poster child for open source as a business model. They also took designs from the community, put them into their own designs, and then didn’t attribute the designs to their original designer. They also make overall crappy products, but usually everyone who has heard about 3d printing but isn’t really invested in it, has heard of Makerbot. Case in point about their crappy hardware, their “smart” extruder comes in a 3 pack replacement.

Most of us have, and most of us held these beliefs WAY before that documentary was ever released. I actually ended up feeling less hostile toward MakerBot after watching that.

Which is funny, because I almost didn’t watch “Print the Legend” because I assumed it would be a glorification of Makerbot.

@Justin_Nesselrotte that’s really fucked up

That’s what I thought in the beginning of the film then around the middle of it, it shows all the bad they’ve done

@ThantiK I’m new to this stuff

@Griffin_Mills My biggest issue with them are their attempts to patent developments produced by the open source hardware community.

My second biggest issue with them is that their products (post-Stratasys acquisition) are all incredibly overpriced and underperforming.

It’s one thing if you have terrible business ethics but produce amazing things, but to have terrible business ethics and still manage to produce crap… Well… Then what’s the point?

I came by to say “Fuck Makerbot” but alas, everyone else beat me to it… I’m more of a “hey, I can build that!” as opposed to “hell lemme just buy one…”. That being said, their stance on open source and then switching to closed source - stealing concepts in the meantime is a shitty business model

Its not just this community, even @MakerBot1 employees think the company and their printers are shit! LOL!

as a Makerbot 5th gen owner i can confirm this negativity

Have you looked at the wanhao printers?

@David_Vandermolen no I haven’t, how are they?

I know a few people with them now and they have done really well especially for the price. One of the guys at Makelab charleston just got the 5s. Better in most respects to the new makerbots. Once they get it up and running I’ll try and post some pics.

@David_Vandermolen okay awesome
