While reparing a toy phone the other day I found this nice way to hold a nut in place. Could probably be a nice way to do the same on printed parts.

Presumably all three columns are attached to the same base, on the other side of the board?

The 2 posts on either side where the screw would bite into plastic was to hold the back panel.
The part with the nut was for the battery compartment access plate.

Yeah, I get that. What I’m asking is, are all three yellow bits attached to the same thing? Presumably that centre post needs to be attached to something.

Though, speaking of attachment, what’s holding the nut in place? Those flanges will stop it rotating, fine, but why doesn’t it just pull out?

yeah the yellow posts go through the PBC and are part of the “front” plastic piece.

I would have to re-open it to see how the not is hold in place. But it looked wedged in these flanges.

Hmm… I can see it being wedged against lateral motion or rotation, but I’m not clear how it would be prevented from popping straight out. Maybe the flanges have a slight overhang to grip over top of the fillet on the outer edges of the nut?

I may need to design and print some test pieces!

I’ll try to find time to re-open it tonight and get better pictures. That one is not that great.

On the same subject got these in yesterday: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/181957154571?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
Will try them with PLA and post on how they can be used.

Here is a post on a similar subject I just found: http://formlabs.com/stories/adding-screw-threads-3d-printed-parts/

Oh, I like those knurled inserts - they should work a treat, if you can get the boss the right size. I’m also going to try that test piece in the other post, but I’ve already done parts with nut pockets and find they work very well.

BTW, 50 inserts for under two bucks? I just ordered them myself - thanks for the link!

yup. I did took about 30 days to get here (Quebec) from China.

Oh yeah, but I don’t mind that. By the time it shows up, I’ll have forgotten I ordered it, so it’ll be like a little present from Past Me to Future Me.

Yup I know that feeling !
