White smoke from smoothie

When powered up, the smps starts to blink and give some feeble noise. But when disconnected from smoothie, it seems to be fine. I could see a bright red color light on smoothie which was kinda unusual, when connected to the supply. But after few seconds, white smoke was seen coming out of smoothie. We immediately switched off everything. Gave it a rest and tried hooking up just the usb to the pc but none of the lights were turned on.
What possibly could be the issue?

Sorry to hear of the smoke. It’s usually a very bad thing.
Presumably the “smps” is a switch mode power supply? The fact that is made a noise (high pitched whine?) when connected to the smoothieboard suggests that it was loaded up. I would guess a a short circuit somewhere or maybe you connected the 24V to the 5V input (the 12-24V input is immediately beside the 5V input and has the same style of connector).

Are you sure you didn’t invert the polarity ?
