Who dares to mid air supports? xD
@Z1yaad the support is supossed to be up from the bed, but bad adhesion leads to this
Love it when the print self-heals.
Are they really necessary, if you have good part cooling?
@1111122 for this part it is needed indeed
You got lucky on that one. Looks like it stuck most of the intended support structure to the part and eventually built on it enough to complete enough of the proper supports for the actual part. Just a little extra clean up required. Nice trick.
I can do up to 5mm overhangs 3mm wide into free air on my printers. After 4 layers the feature is flat. A really good part cooling fan duct is the key here. I use the capability to put in self supporting feature helps where I don’t want to use supports and then trim off the support loops when done.
Have made attempts along this line, with … shall we say … rather (very) limited success.
@Preston_Bannister I was gambling with this one. I don’t usually do, but I want this part before leaving home and I had no time for this one hahaha
@Luis_Diaz Sometimes a gamble pays off in spades. I learned that I can span 96 mm on a bridge (less than 0.3mm of sag) because I forgot to turn on support material and didn’t realize it till 5 hours into the print. I let it go to see what would happen…
