Why would my base layers be messed up like this.

Why would my base layers be messed up like this. I am very new to printing. My first piece I did looked good and no problems. I bought some new filament it is PLA black from monoprice where I got my printer. No way to start printing if the base sucks.

It looks like your hot end is too high.

Hot wnd to hot and nozzle not close enough to the bed. Google bed leveling and you should find your answer.

Also what are you using on your print bed? Tape, glue, slurry? Is that abs, pla or other?

Don’t get discouraged. Just make sure your bed is properly leveled. As the other comments point out, it looks like the nozzle is too high. Take a piece of standard copy paper and adjust the platform until the paper can slide between the nozzle and the bed with some resistance. Also, using blue tape or a glue stick also helps.

Thanks for the help I think I figured it out. I had bought the new filament so I went back to monoprice to see what it said. I got PLA it said a printing temp of 210c. I was only at 195c so I upped the temp and it printed great I think. I did go back and level the bed again. How much space should the be between hot head and the heated bed? I got a filler gauge so I can get it right. I may have to use something other than the mat it came with for my bed. Got it as close as I can but the is no adjustment left to get closer so I may try tape.

Mat? They gave you a “mat”? Does it have a brand name? There are some build surfaces that I guess you might call a “mat” which are made for printing on.

Can you upload pictures of your print bed and machine? I just bought an aftermakerr bed that came with a magnetic base I could call a mat. He could have one if these. As far as bed adjustments, depending on your printer you may also have a z axis end stop adjustment screw or knob. Moving this will change when the z axis stops and allow you to get closer to the bed.

I got it from Monoprice.

hmmm…maybe the first question we ask should be “Could you show us your printer?” so that we do not have to guess as much.

Sorry Nathaniel I guess I should have posted what I am using.

Nothing that a number of us, myself included, have not done. I can’t blame you for it if I do it myself. I am just adding it to my list of things to try to remember to ask people.

Never have seen it before I am flying blind but… When you home your z axis, do you hear and see a switch that is clicking? If so can you adjust it? How much farther down does you z axis need to go down until it makes contact with the med? Sorry for slow response was driving to Portland.
