Will this Kapton Tape work on Replicator 2X?

Will this Kapton Tape work on Replicator 2X? http://tinyurl.com/ln9zooy

It seems to have 2.7mm thickness, which is thinner than the 5mm of this particular one… http://tinyurl.com/d2yh4xa

So, my question is: What’s the thickness of the Kapton Tape that came with original order of your MakerBot Replicator 2X? Is it 2.7mm or 5mm?

Thanks for any input everyone!!

I don’t think the tape is 2.7mm OR 5mm thick. Do you realize how damn thick that is? I think they’re saying that all of the layers of tape on the roll end up being that thick. The tape will work fine no matter the thickness, you have the ability to adjust the z height to account for it.

Oh, you mean all layers in the roll tube as it comes new?

That’s what it says on their site. All the layers in the roll tube as it comes new adds up to that height. The kapton itself isn’t that thick per layer…

So is it safe to buy the first choice in the original post above? I think it gives the most bang for the buck, and it’s the widest of all rolls I found - 7"X108ft…

Yes, it’s perfectly fine.

The 3M PET tape that the Lulzbot came with, has been the best stuff ever for ABS for me. Haven’t tried PLA with it though. PLA just gets the blue tape treatment. Kapton is just way too expensive.

@John_Ridley soapy water worked for me, then I went to straight glass, trying out straight mirror next. Found 4 8x8 mirror for 5 bucks in clearance.

So glass doesn’t break at 110 degrees? A regular hairspray holds it to the build plate without any other hardware?

Would tampered glass work? I have a glass shelf from Ikea we never used. Need to find a way to cut it to match the size of the build plate…

Do not attempt to cut tempered glass. It will shatter when cut.

Mic Possert, Is there a YouTube video on how to attach picture frame glass onto build plate using hairspray? I just got it and ready to attach it… Thanks!

You don’t attach it via hairspray. You attach it with clips on the side of the bed.

So what’s the hair spray for?

To spray on the glass before you start printing. It helps the PRINT stay down.

Ah… cool I thought you’d spray the hair spray onto the built plate and attach the glass on top of it… Thanks Anthony!

I use kapton on aluminum for PLA, my bed can’t get hot enough for abs yet. But I used soapy water and a credit card as a squeegee. Soap up the bed and the sticky side of the tape before you cut it out the roll. It allows for you to inkwell the inevitable folding that occurs. Just cover up any electronics and unplug your mains because the more water the better. We use a replicator 2x at work with ABS and I told the guys to do the same and it works. Each of them tore the kapton at least once while incorrectly calibrating the bed. The rule in the office, you break it, you fix it

I attached the clips on the side and made sure the extruder nozzles don’t run into them. Used cheap $1.29 hair spray from 99cent store, it’s Pantene Pro-V extra string hold to spray the surface as soon as I saw the build plate heated to 110 degrees. Currently waiting for a simple print of a towel hook being finished… Video soon…

Here’s the video of how it worked for me… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=alOuDS9wE6s&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Thank you everyone who helped!!

I haven’t found a hair spray here that works yet so instead I am using glue stick on Ikea Sörli mirrors. The glue washes off in cold water when the build up is too much.
