Work in progress. A 6x8 (550x732mm) LED matrix that is the first of 12 modules that will form a LED wall.
Each pixel is 82mm in diameter and is made of a paper coffee cup with a 3-LED WS2811 PCB mounted directly behind the coffee cup.
The 3mm laser cut MDF frame is slotted together depending on a friction fit. No glue or screws used.
The original plan was to use plotter media (PP) as front diffusor, but this stole too much light in daylight conditions, so I ended up skipping it. The three LEDs per pixel ended up creating an interesting effect in itself. The pixels are brighter than the photos suggest.
It was designed parametrically in Fusion 360, so it is easy to change the grid size. I ended up with 6x8 due to some inconsistencies with the laser beam in one of the corners of the laser, which would have wasted time for me to get around.
At the moment I’m waiting on a new batch of MDF. I was a couple of hours too late to get next day delivery, so now it is next week delivery… This really puts the pressure on, since I need everything done before September 1.
