Work In Progress:

I am building my first light sculpture, for Burning Man. I decided to do a small scale prototype first to get the electronics and animations working right…glad I did.
Not the cleanest build, but it is a prototype, after all. Hardware is Teensy 3.2, APA 102’s. The diffuser is agricultural shade cloth; I’m hoping porous enough to reduce the wind load on playa.

It makes fairly extensive use of RGB sets and HSV palettes.
Code is here: https://github.com/PaulGuthrie/Cosmic-Jelly/blob/master/CosmicJelly_Test2.ino
but expect it to change.

The large version will be at camp BRC3PO, on the https://youtu.be/JlY88xxA7yw?t=3m00s plaza. Come by and check it out.

As always, kudos to Daniel and Mark for the amazing library, and to +Marc Miller for helping me realize I had done something dumb.

@Paul_Guthrie That is looking to be a super build. What’s the scale of the final piece planned to be?

Person size…shaft is 6 ft, bell is 8 ft diameter if flat. I’m still working on how much curvature I want, but overall, probably similar width to height.

@Paul_Guthrie Great build and fantastic animation! Thank you for sharing your excellently detailed code.

@Paul_Guthrie if the bell is 8ft and it’s 6ft off the ground I would seriously consider putting some vent slits in the shade cloth on the bell. I’ve found even 40% shade still catches a lot of wind and you have basically built an umbrella

A few slits in the shade should let the wind escape without being detrimental to the effect.

Great job though, looks great, will try and come check it out this year.

Yeah, thanks Ben, that’s been on my mind. The stuff I am using is pretty tight. The diffuser design is in six gores, so there are some inherent slits, but I am prepared to slice it up further if it looks like it’s taking off. Hope to see you.
