Yup, I have one and I love it. I can still connect via Cura/USB if I want all the options. I also added a buildtak print surface. For large files, create the gcode in Cura, then upload the gcode to the printer.

I commented and added some notes. Yes, it’s for newbies  what other printer can you give to a newbie and she has success on her own?! That was cool.

His thoughts on the kit was a misunderstanding. I gave it to him to ensure he saw the inside. We removed it from the cart- never sold well. Since it’s been gone for a while, I would have preferred him omitting that. But no big deal.

The ONLY way you can buy it is WITH the heated bed. That changed after he got it. In part because of his comments to me. So it was a bummer hearing negative tone on something that was fixed. I would have preferred “it needed a heated bed-- now it has one and they made a good decision!” Oh well.

The cloud stuff: most of the lack of features was all intentional for newbies, we don’t want the Tom’s of the world to use the cloud- they won’t. But some are over the tweaking and just want to print … it appeals to some who like no fuss. And all of us have a sister, friend, whatever that need an entry level printer to even get interested.

In the end, I love Tom and what he’s doing. He’s a fair guy. One commenter on YouTube voiced my final opinion: his channel is biased towards power users, so things that don’t target features and power are probably undersold. Some will understand that. Some will just think it’s a bad printer. But I knew that it may be misunderstood going in. Every review needs good and bad and he had that.

I really take the feedback to heart and we are already implementing things to shore up any weakness. I was early to the cloud. It’s complicated and expensive. But as long as you keep refining it, it’s a powerful tool. The day is coming where EVERY printer must be ABLE to conn etc to a cloud service, or it won’t be able to compete. Take it or leave it. But as a manufacturer, I’ll keep working on making it better when people DO want that option. And I’ll continue to seek an easier UX when they opt against the cloud and want local operation.

All my best
Brook

I’d certainly like the video to be edited or amended in some way to reflect these facts. A large part of the video was focused on this negative, but if it had been changed due to that feedback before the video was even released, I think it’s only fair.

They’re pushing the technology forward and that’s what counts. It seems like all the real issues came down to software rather than hardware, which means Printrbot can keep iterating on the machines already in the wild. I’m excited for what’s to come. Always love seeing innovation like this. Brook I hope you’re giving the MK2 a run for its money with this.

Nice

@Brook_Drumm I’m sorry but the lack of blue racing stripes and the missing dolphin really turned me off from considering your printer.

I was a little disappointed to not see the tinyg stuff mentioned, it potentially adds superior printing characteristics that even high end diy machines don’t really have the option of. Tom’s a technical guy so would have been nice to hear about snap crackle pop in that context.

@Francis_Lee The printer comes with 2 Files (online) - to print racing stripes and a tiny dolphine to complete the apperance…

@Brad_Hill cred for knowing about snap crackle and pop!

I think for the vast majority of the population, the simplified approach is a step in the right direction. Personally, I would not use a simple interface as I like to control every last setting, however, most people looking to use the printer as just a printer would love this. I think that the pinnacle of simplified 3d printing would be a point where an algorithm can run analysis on the parts that are inputted and can determine the complexity and purpose of the parts. From there it would determine even the basic resolution settings and support generation etc. In effect, it would be as simple as a modern 2d printer. And also @Brook_Drumm What about lock and drop?

Really good feedback! Love it

I am totally fine with having a beginner mode. But just Open that thing for more advanced use. Is it possible to use a raspi with octoprint on the USB Port? Of course opening would also mean Open the Wireless .

Yes. The bare bones we are preparing to sell might be a great match w octoprint and small touch screen
