Wow, Ok I’m still learning. I never realized that in Simplify3D I could have multiple temps during the print… I just found that re-reading an old thread on Google Forum. I changed it on a whim after my initial PLA laydown @ 230 and then changed to 220 and I seem to have made my cursed blobs disappear! (print still in progress, so knock on wood!!!) These are Hersey Kiss keeper necklaces for my kids’ school party Friday. Gotta have 3d printing fun where you can!
Really 230 for PLA? Is that what you need for first-layer adhesion?
Yeah 230 seems high for pla… I only
Print that high if I am pushing serious filament through at a high rate as it really doesn’t even get up to that temp.
The machine readout might be misleading as there’s some amount of tolerance in the resistance. The actual temp hitting the plastic might vary. Different hotend materials, designs and configurations make a difference. Also, there are genuine high temp PLAs out there that can take more. But 230˚C isn’t necessarily exceeding the recommended temps for normal PLA. Just find a temperature that works for you and go with it.
Makergeek PLA. listed as 210-230 temp. Reason I use 230 was because 1) that was the default and it worked.
2) my printer is in the basement and it is colder down here. I will start playing with the temps to see what happens.
I use 190 °C (all layers) with quality PLA filaments only as the quick cool down is critical for overhangs and bridges here.
@Stephen_Shimatzki
If your hot-end can’t make up for being in a cold basement, you have worse problems to contend with than PLA temp…
Also: fan?
@paul_wallich no fan… I’m running it now @ 200c. Don’t know why I never changed it before. next print I’ll drop it a bit more…
oops… Ok, so from day one with this printer I marked “R” and “L” on my fans so I wouldn’t mix them up… It dawned on me last week why I was getting better results when I cooled it down, because the fans were on BACKWARDS from the factory!!! (Wanhao Duplicator 4s) Seriously! And I never sat down with it long enought to REALLY work with it and pinpoint the problems. Fans are in correct location now and thins are printing much better. I’m currently starting @ 210 but step it down to 200 after a number of layers. Mainly just because I’m still in the cold basement and I want the first layers to stick.
