First 3D printed metal Gun: http://j.mp/1aaNeDF
#3dprinting #gun
Game changer
That doesn’t look like it takes advantage of any of the good points of 3d printing — it’s just a straight up more expensive replica in a crappier material.
Use fewer, more complexly shaped parts! Use the ability to print multiple parts already assembled! Sheesh.
You want proof of concept print me a 2 cycle weedeater motor that runs, not another gun thats going to get people clamoring for laws to Regulate and Control this dangerous new industry. Dumbasses are going to fix it so no one can have a 3d printer without a license at this rate.
The problem are the people clamoring for more laws not the people using tools to make things.
You still need to get ammunition, which is a controlled item, in most places.
Stick a blade on the end of a weed eater and it is a killing machine too…
Both have nothing to do with what technology made them. As we all discussed with the last gun, anyone with a few metal shop tools can make a gun.
@Michael_AtOz and I don’t see any of these basement gun manufacturers proclaiming to the world “LOOK WHAT I CAN DO!!!” Notice me for I can tell the kid next door how to kill you!!! Deliberately poking a sleeping dragon so as to make him aware of your activities is just stupid. We only hear about those guys in their basements AFTER the police go arrest them. And as far as ammo being controlled - I can walk into my local walmart and buy ammo without ID - the gun is a bit tougher. But I do not care one whit weather they print their guns - I only care that they are proclaiming to a generally gun fearing world that they can, thereby threatening my future right to print what I chose.
To make something with a 3d printer that is that specialized is unprecedented.
Some people everywhere don’t get the picture. There always have been bad people who will find some way to do bad things regardless of the instrument used. There are also people who are going to stretch the acceptable limits of any new technology. Usually it is porn instead of weapons but still …
@Jonathan_Nardone explain to me how a gun is more specialized than say, the engine mounts of an Airbus A380? or jet turbine blades, or implantable heart valves, or artificial hips… the list goes on. All 3D printing is is a Manufacturing technology. it’s not some mystical thing that puts weapons in everyone’s hands.
I find nothing redeeming in the creation of another gun. Impress me…heal the world.
A week or so ago some poor sucker in the UK got thrown in jail and his computer, 3d printer and a fair amount of other stuff seized by the police because he had printed some printer upgrade parts that RESEMBLED a trigger and a clip for a pistol. No working gun - no intent to print a gun - just hysteria caused by the first printed gun crapfest. Even after they were shown the actual use of the parts they decided to hold everything for further investigation. Now we can print a better gun - yay. This is not about whether you should print a gun, although it is highly illegal just about everywhere, it is about scaring the sheep of society so they summon their guard dogs who will then pass more laws to make all of our lives miserable. Just because some twit thinks its cool to show the world the great working gun they just made.
@Michael_AtOz A weed eater with a Bowie knife on the head sound like a fantastic weapon for a survival horror game.
@Doug_Rector “the gun is a bit tougher.” A radio program here said if you really want a gun (in the US) go to the hospital ER on the wrong side of the tracks early hours Saturday morning, observe, they get dumped/hidden outside when someone needs medical help as they have metal detectors.
edit/ easier than printing one, and less likely to blow-up /edit
@Stephen_Baird
I had a large circular saw blade in mind…
How much machining was required. Its not just printed and not finished.
Must be close to a million $ of machines involved.
So where’s the game changer. I can build a gun with a lathe and milling machine for $40,000
You need skills and knowledge for the lathe, you just need money for the 3D printer.
@Roger_Palmen last time I checked MasterCam did a pretty damn good job at setting up jobs for the CNC lathe I use on occasion… so I say either way it’s just money (and the CNC lathe is likely MUCH cheaper than the metal printer!!)
@Roger_Palmen I’m a skilled manual machinist and lean trainer and all I see is way more cost than needed. Its just a gimmick to sell products. Its the Apple effect. Overpriced for something people can get cheaper and better.
As regards skills with printers and CNC lathes there’s lots of g code programs that do the work for you.
