I’ve been working on a Kickstarter project for awhile now (the last 5 months). I’m finally at a stage where I can say it’s finished and ecstatic to share it with all of you, the very community that helped me with setting up my LEDs and understanding FastLED programming.
My project is called Aquarius, a lighted fountain that manipulates water. I installed 60x APA102C LEDs around an interior wood frame and programmed FastLED with various strobing patterns ranging from 75-100 Hz. In addition to that, I have a pump and electromagnet that vibrate an outlet stream of water at 80 Hz. I managed to create highly visual Persistence of Vision displays using water (akin to the levitating water experiments).
Traditionally, these experiments were done in large scale art installations or with special cameras and were never really available to the consumer. So I decided to miniaturize it and use the latest tools of our generation (FastLED and APA102Cs!) to make this lab experiment a home reality.
Let me know what you all think (Campaign is launching on Nov 7)!
@Will_Tatam About 20 dB, equivalent to a the noise of very light rain drops on the window. I PWM’d the motor and brought down the voltage with a buck converter to the point that its noiseless. I also added vibration dampeners to the bottom to take away pretty much all noise from the electromagnet.
@Will_Tatam Thanks! It didn’t start off that way that’s for sure, I kept encountering small little problems like noise and splashes which is what led me to make those small tweaks over time.
That looks amazing! Love the wood and the curves. Do you have an email list for launch announcement? Because a week from now I won’t remember to look for it. #adultadd#forgetful
I don’t know what to say… but, Wow!
Every now and again someone posts something pretty freaking great…
This is one of those times.
Good luck with the KS campaign.
Awesome piece of art. It’s the first strobo fountain I see with a double wave. With the RGB pattern it looks a bit like a DNA. I love the droplets shape the structure. Perhaps the control panel could be improved. Can’t wait to put my hands on it!
Thank you all for the wonderful feedback! It’s really encouraging to see them all. I do have a preview page setup here (I wasn’t sure if I was allowed to post it at first since it may be seen as a sales promo):
I’ve been getting alot of feedback online and local and will take them all to heart. Someone suggested that I could use wood dye instead of stain to make the color of the frame way more vibrant. The control panel could also be improved as mentioned here. And the shape of the base could also be slimmed down a bit. All these changes can definitely be accommodated.
