I printed over 15 cubes while trying calibrate my new mBot. My first print was going to be a pony. (My Daughter’ request
Here’s the pony with the support structures, without the support and then , because I couldn’t resist, the final painted pony.
This print was done in PLA so I have to use a raft. Getting rid of the raft is insanely tedious. What are the best settings for rafts? I just can’t seem to find the sweet-spot.
I don’t have a favorite, really. Rarity because she’s a maker, Luna because she’s a dreamwalker, Scootaloo because of social awkwardness, Twilight because of her knowledge…fuck it, everypony is best pony…
By the way, the print turned out amazing, is this the models with the thickened tail stem? I’ve always had issue with the tails breaking off unless I print them really large.
@ThantiK I have reasons to buy one, just trying to work out if I have the time to do it. It sounds like it can be fairly involved to maintain the printers at present. I’m an anime fan, and would like to print the figures, your pony is a good example of the kind of shape.
I’d wait a little longer if you’re doing complex stuff. FDM printers are really fickle with that kind of thing and support structures aren’t so good that they can do THAT fine of structure commonly found in anime figures.
@Daniel_Noree
I used cheap poster paint (Mixed with some Modge Podge) and citadel paints (The type used for tabletop figurines.). I sealed the paint in with “Micro Gloss” from microscale industries. It’s important to prime the surface with a plastic primer.

My initial impression of the machine wasn’t very good.
There was a ribbon-cable that wasn’t plugged in. On closer inspection, I noticed the plug’ pins were bend. I had to bend them straight before the ribbon cable could fit.
The machine was filthy and covered in greasy little tiny hand-prints. (which I hope belongs to a small adult)
The machine is covered with scratches on the clear plastic. The machine was very well packaged so it must have left the factory with these artifacts.
The build platform was scratched all over.
I had to adjust the position of the switches in the back because the print-platform didn’t stop when it needed to.
The machine made a terrible sound when I switched it on. A little grease fixed that.
There was filament still stuck in the one extruders. (Probably from testing it in the factory)
The machine didn’t come with the complementary 2 rolls of filament that they promised on their website.
I waited 2 and a half months for the machine to arrive. (They said there was only a 4 week lead time)
2 of the cooling fans makes unearthly noises when I switch the machine on. It goes away after a while.
The machine is shit but it prints well. I wanted to return the machine, but my supplier said that there’s very little chance that the mBot guys will honor their guarantee. Their support sucks apparently.
My supplier said that the Wanhao printers is comparable in price but the quality of the Wanhao printers are far superior to the mBot.
Wish I knew that 3 months ago
I also have an mbot, I can only say one thing… don’t even think about buying one!!.
Right now, I have it to a point where I can print reliably, but it’s been 6 months and modifying a lot of parts thanks to having access to a lathe and mill. They say it’s a makerbot clone, but actually many parts are poorly machined, other are old versions of makerbot parts, and others are simply bad installed because they just copied the replicator but they have no idea about how some things work. Just as an example, I have dual extruders, and both thermocouples are installed without electrical insulation to the heating block, so, the result is that they are short circuited between them. Yeah, it’s incredible how incompetent these people are.
@berry_jordaan to fix your raft issue, try not using one at all, instead use a brim of 4-6mm. I’ve switched to using a brim for a while and it is so much easier to remove and I think it gives better adhesion to the bed over a raft by a lot.
@berry_jordaan & @Pedro_Perez_de_Ayala I´m very sorry to hear about your bad experiences! I hope things can only get better from here! Wish you guys all the best!
@Jason_Ray , that’s because I’m a brony. Just not one of the obnoxious in your face, fedora wearing, poor hygiene types. I’ve been a fan of Lauren Faust since before the reboot. I could take the easy way out and just claim my daughters like it, but honestly I watch it more than they do.
