I'm just getting started on my R7 build.

I’m just getting started on my R7 build. Step 1 - Can someone confirm that lower row of mini wheels do not get a 1mm shim between the wheel and the 6mm spacer? The instructions clearly state that the upper row of minis gets a shim between the wheel and eccentric spacers.

More questions to follow…

Thanks,

Don

You are looking at the build instructions here correct?

In that there are exploded view images that Brandon made to help confirm what parts go in chat order.

I also made this back in the day, but don’t use it as gospel, this is old at this point and Brandon might have made changes.

Yes, I’m using rev 6 of the build instructions. The bottom row in the exploded view in the instructions isn’t clear to me. The R7V1 video says the shims are omitted but it isn’t clear to me if that is for the large wheels only.

Hi Don, no shims used anywhere on the build other than in between the wheel bearings.

Great looking drawing Eric!

@Brandon_Satterfield I swear at one point I had a full set of exploded view drawings… but I can’t find them for the life of me.

Thanks guys!

Wait, no shims on any of the mini wheels?

Sorry guys let me look in the AM to verify. I do know I made a mistake and the large wheels do get the 10x5x1 shim on the Y gantry plates. I’ll double check the model and verify the BOM and instructions are correct.

@Eclsnowman yeah the build instructions came from the exploded views, I’ll need to dig around, believe most are just suppressed in the sub-assemblies that became parts. Will open the model tomorrow and verify shims for sure and see if I can find these.

Leaving out the shims places the ends of the mini-wheel bolts 1mm closer to the C beam…my 25 mm bolts were about 26.1 mm long and I had to grind them down with a dremmel tool to get them to clear the C beam. Moving the shim to the counterbored side eliminates 1 mm of grinding…which is what I’ll do when assembling the second one.

Is there a preferred method for submitting notes, tips, corrections, or suggestions for editing the build instructions?

Whoa, no grinding required @Don_Price not in the last 500 machines built… :-). Doesn’t mean things don’t get messed up occasionally…
Please give me about 1 hour and I will clarify.

Ok… all straight. Apologies let me get some pictures and the manual up. No shim big wheels, shim between spacer and wheel little wheels.

I know, the opposite I said earlier.

Use the heck out of R7s, hadn’t had to build one in ages.

Im looking at this view in the build instructions for step one.

We see large wheel only gets the shim between the bearings the small wheels do get the shims. Again apologize for the earlier confusion.

I can see how this is confusing though, Ill see if we can get the bearings pulled out of the small wheel and make things more clear.

I collected some notes from my build. I didn’t watch the videos at all so my notes could have been covered there. If you want them I can post them here or I could edit a document with my notes in blue or something.

Making progress and on to Step 4. My kit has the limit switches installed but I cant tell if the Z axis plates should be assembled with the switches on the same or opposite sides of the C beam. Any photos (drawings?) of the limit switches installed?

+Don Price , you still looking for this answer bud? The limit switches are new, so I’d be the only guy that knows right now.
