OneUp vs Simple. I pulled the trigger on a PrintrBot Simple.
The OneUp has a lot of tempting features that seem almost too good to be true (at least for the price). It uses the same electronics, nearly the same motors and the same hot end. I like that it uses belts (vs string wrapped around sanding belts) and I like the design idea of putting the Z-axis bearings far apart (although I have hear people say it still sags on the ACME Screw).
In looking at the Simple, it comes with an Aluminum extruder and metal bed (not heated). It has been assembled and demonstrated by many, many people online. It comes with end stops, twice as many linear bearings for less play/sag and laser cut plywood (vs MDF - which based on comments tends to be more fragile for small parts).
So I ordered it Sunday from Adafruit (along with some bright green LEDs), and it was delivered to me in Canada 48 hours later. I was even pleasantly surprised that UPS did not charge me their customary anti-small-guy brokerage fee (typcially $45) - just some taxes ($16).
The assembly has started!
@Printr_bot BTW, PrintrBot people - is that number burned into the first piece some kind of serial number? Just curious.
Now to find an affordable source of quality 1.75mm PLA in Canada…
I stained/oiled the wood before I put mine together. It sucks waiting for it to dry but it looks really nice.
… Just remember to get those zipties and fishing lines good-n-tight!
@Alex_Wiebe Check @Voxel_Factory Great price and fast no overcharge delivery. If your in Montreal you can also pickup.
And welcome to the @Printrbot owner’s club. Be sure to check the many many mods available on Thingiverse.
I personally did the X and Y mod so that my Simple can now print 220m(X) x 160mm(Y) x 100mm(Z).
@Alex_Wiebe I second @Andre_Courchesne1 's welcome.
I’ve had my Simple for about a year, and have done many mods on it. Feel free to ping me if you have any questions!
@Alex_Wiebe Congrats and welcome to the club!
@Andre_Courchesne1 Ooooh, could you point me to those mods? I could really use some extra X and Y print area.
@Brent_Newhall Search for iamjonlawrence on Thingiverse.com. His mods are excellent. I went for a different X mod than his, but I don’t have the link handy.
@Carlton_Dodd Awesome, thanks!
@Brent_Newhall
First my things some one of which is a little protector for the string tension on the stock Simple: http://www.thingiverse.com/IndianaTux/designs
This is the Y mod I did on mine: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:242185
And this is the X axis:
@Carlton_Dodd with the mods you have done I am pretty sure you are 4 steppers, a base, some msc nuts and bolts and a printrboard away from having 2 bots…
@Camerin_hahn LOL Yeah, I did notice that many of the stock parts are now in my parts box.
I recommend sealing the wood before assembling it, wood does not bode well with moisture. If not sealed, it will cause problems down the line.
I love my Simple, one of the best decisions i have made. Worked great after build, and i learned so much just putting it together. i have also upgraded X, Y, and Z as well as added fans, and other things. That’s one thing you will want is a 40mm fan for the extuder and motor… Make sure to join the Pbot formums at http://www.printrbottalk.com its an active and very helpful community.
Was thinking about getting this too, but wasn’t confident I could assemble it properly.
@WookieFanboi They have the assembled version for $100 more, It is not too bad, but much like Ikea instructions there are some times steps that are not clear. you will need to use some logic. But in general the machine is really simple.
@Camerin_hahn yeah - thanks! I did see that while shopping - ended up getting a plastic scribbler, but may move to a Simple (kit) once I am a little more familiar with 3D printing.
Love my simple kit. Actually is printing better than my red metal simple (which makes me so angry) lol
@WookieFanboi , I used some YouTube walk throughs along with the Printrbot instructions and everything was super easy.
Fun to hear users helping users!! I sure love all the mods out there. I am getting geared up for a refresh of the makers edition Simlpe in a few weeks… Let me know what’s on your wish list. My goal is to keep the price point and squeeze in some user friendly mods (bed level sensor, anyone?)… Already a great starter bot but determined to make it even better.
