To all the moderators and owners of this community:
It seems to me that lately we are seeing a lot of stupid youtube movies, with no real content, just promoting 3d-printing vloggers?
Like @John_Ecker_GeoDroidJ , @SgaboLab , +Duke Doks, etc.
Am I to understand that the rules about self-promotion don’t apply anymore?
It is not my intention to start a war here, but I’d like to discuss this.
I’ve noticed it too, and I’ve kind of allowed it - because John Ecker, for one, actually helps people in the community, etc. So he’s not just simply self-promoting. Some of the others I’ve been a little hesitant to let through but…at a quick glance, they looked like legitimate content that could be useful to others.
I’ve been swamped with constantly removing spam. I leave the queue alone for 4 hours and I’ve got 50+ things to go through, with G+'s dog-slow interface, and I do a lot of it while on break at work, etc. I don’t know if any of the other moderators are active anymore. Sometimes I suspect it’s just me.
Youtube videos are ok, so long as what is posted is related to that forum topic, I’m ok with it. Its all the other crap and spam that gets posted that detracts from everything. I’m all for locking this community, making joining via moderator approval only so people can’t freely spam multiple forums at the same time. Thantik can you discuss that with the other mods and forum admin. Call a meeting and find out who is still around, kuckthe non respnders, and call for new admins. The last thing we need is another abandoned community on G+.
I remove stuff all the time
The spam is getting worse and Google isn’t doing shit about it. I honestly think they dropped the platform and just forgot to turn the servers off. I ban like 10 people per day.
I report plenty of spam posts, and I agree with @Stephanie_A that El Goog really doesn’t seem to be trying when it comes to spam. I think they gave up vs. facebook.
I will say that I found @SgaboLab videos useful for my new Tronxy X5S, so while I don’t watch a lot of videos they seem like useful content vs. the pure spam and smut posts that are unrelated to 3d printing. My 2¢…
@MidnightVisions I won’t abandon the community. I still pay a lot of attention to it, basically just acting as a janitor, cleaning up posts, removing garbage.
@Stephanie_A , glad to hear others are still around. I suspect the spam is just SO huge in number that it just feels like I’m the only one doing it. We had some instances of some mods being a little over-zealous with the ban button, and even I make mistakes and accidentally ban legitimate content because it becomes muscle memory to click that ban button.
I usually get to it in the morning if I’m not running late and in the evening a time or two. And I try to do it every day but some days I just can’t. It’s an insane backlog every time I look at it.
Regarding the videos, I have mixed feelings. I don’t really watch the channels, but I have considered starting one, so I don’t really feel my opinion is as valid here.
However, just to throw this out there: what makes a good and related YouTube video? How do we differentiate between self promotion and good content? Can something be both?
Hey guys wasn’t aware of that rule, if I’m stepping over the line let me know. I only post videos if they are on topic and do try to be informative. I’ve taken the +1’s as positive feedback.
It makes videos more acceptable to me if they have a clear description of what they are about. Just a “click here” button isn’t enough. -Then I can decide for myself if I want to watch them.
I’d also like to toss my hat in the ring if you guys need more help fighting spam but as far as I can tell you’re doing a pretty good job. I have noticed an uptake in people just posting to promote their content but usually it is beneficial and honestly it’s not too much to just ignore. I share much of @Justin_Nesselrotte 's opinion on the videos as well as @Ken_Wagnitz 's. I think that if you’re linking to content you should post a bit of a description or a reason on why you’re sharing it to the group, otherwise it just seems like blatant content promotion.
