What's peoples' experience with Simplify3D?

What’s peoples’ experience with Simplify3D? I’ve only heard good things about it for the most part… never used it but thinking of giving it a try. Is $149 worth it? They also have a compatibility tool, but smoothieware isn’t listed on there. Is that going to be a problem?

Simplify3D is definitely worth it. I used Cura for over a year before I made the switch; I tried to go back to it last week just to see how different the experience is and I couldn’t even stand it for more than a couple prints.

Worth it. I use a pirated version alongside the real version because the DRM-free cracked version doesn’t limit me to what computers I can use it on. (I use it at home, and 2 laptops at work). Really the support material generation is second to none. It’s a pretty good slicer. Ever since using it, I haven’t touched Cura, Slic3r, KISS, nothing else.

Oh so worth it. I keep trying other Slicers, but I’ve become so set in my workflow now that I couldn’t do without it. Dooooo eeeeet…

@Adam_Steinmark what did you like more about it then in Cura? An what version of Cura did you use? We like to improve Cura to be number 1 again

I switched from cura to s3d because of variable layer height. This is very important becauseI want to print fast. What I dislike about s3d is the terrible bridging algorithm. If cura solves these I might go back.

@Daid_Braam Add delta support and you’ll be number 1

I stopped using Cura simply because of their open hostility to printers other than the Ultimaker. Won’t go back after that.

Edit: Dont want to go off topic accusing others of being off topic or unfair. To answer the question I really like S3D.

I also want to throw craftware in, it has manual support and I use it all the time, it works great for me also its realy easy to use.

@Aric_Norine during some of the latest versions they removed the ability to easily define parameters for any machine other than the Ultimaker. Hell, they STILL don’t have an option for a round build area any longer.

@ThantiK Very true. I noticed extra settings for Ultimaker yesterday when I decided to add it to test something. I was surprised.

@Shai_Schechter you get nozzle and material options as we have “variants” and defaults for those for our printers. But if you add the Ultimaker 2 you actually get less settings. If you add the Ultimaker 3, naturally you get more settings as you get all the dual extrusion settings as well. Nothing hidden, nothing you cannot configure for other machines if you dive into the machine definitions, but also more complex to setup.

@ThantiK the round build volume doesn’t fit the code architecture very well. And custom printers can be added right in the “add printer” menu:

So get your facts right.

But, sorry I asked. Guess we are evil for providing free software.

@Daid_Braam I didn’t mean to sound like your work isn’t appreciated. The bummer is the new Ultimaker not having Delta support, which is forcing some companies like ours to look for other options now. If I could help, I would, but I’m not a programmer.

I think you will find more than a few companies making the shift away from Cura nowadays as Ultimaker’s PR team is prioritizing Ultimaker in all the menu choices. Completely understandable since Ultimaker is funding the development, but it seems like this is just the reality of what will happen because of it.

@Jaime_van_Kessel fyi

@Daid_Braam how many versions of cura lacked that “add printer” menu? How many times have I seen you on here with the phrase “Ultimaker only for now”? My facts are plenty straight. Factually, Ultimaker was hostile to printers other than their own during that switchover. You couldn’t even change the filament diameter without things breaking.

I know. I dealt with customers who were massively confused why they couldn’t use the newest version of Cura with our machine. You seem to be insulated from the fact that lots of other companies were utilizing that software, and the way Ultimaker went about things completely fucked it for anyone except Ultimaker users.

Hell, even now Delta users are still inconvenienced. They might be able use the software theoretically, but the newest versions lack an option that the older versions had.

So that’s why we suggest a commercial package now, and include it. We tell everyone to stay away from Cura.

@Daid_Braam Your effing jerks at this point with your pushy ‘we are nice accept it or be mocked’ social bullying BULLSHIT. You should be banned from this community you opportunistic bullying jerks. I had a printer for 5 months, said something online that was essentially true, that cura did not support my new DIY delta and your pseudo impartial mod making money from posting videos asked me directly how I could dare say that? when it was and still is true. effing uninstalling Cura right now since you’re going to be the pushy assholes around here. Ultimaker is a never buy to me now, knowing the connection and how you try to push others around and manipulate narratives without any shred of honesty online.

I switched from Slic3r to S3D because I failed to take advantage of the 14-day return policy. However, anecdotally I believe it did improve my print quality slightly and the support generation is perfect imo. Never had any issues removing support, at least when I deleted it from the certain areas prior to generating the g-code.

Not thrilled with setting up presets as compared to Slic3r, which felt more intuitive to me versus plain text files in S3D. Some type of wizard to walk you through setting up custom presets would be nice.

Love the idea of displaying “my” printer in the view screen, but sadly I suck at modeling so I haven’t figured it out yet.

Don’t like that the brim and skirt are the “same” setting. So I often forget to switch back from one or the other.

@AlohaMilton @ThantiK I’m still wondering what I did to get this attitude from people. I’m not sure what “mod making money from videos” you are talking about. Are you confusing me with someone else?
I’ve always been very open and clear about what was supported in Cura when and where and not. And I’ve never asked anyone to take anything down. If there is someone from Ultimaker doing this, let me know. And please show me where, if someone within the company is spreading miscommunication I’m more then willing to put a stop to that.

Only thing I did was showing that the add custom printer option IS there, after it was pointed out that we didn’t have that feature, which is obviously wrong this day in time. It’s like saying Makerbot machines are horrible printers based on experience of the Thing’o’matic.

I cannot change the history of the 2.1 and 2.2 not supporting custom printers in an easy way. After all, the time machine project at Ultimaker is far from finished. And we do need to set priorities during development. Maybe those priorities where wrong?

We’ll see what we can do for round buildplates. As that’s the only thing really missing for delta machine. Machine center 0,0 is supported as far as I know. Let me know if there is more then that to support a delta. (After all, we don’t own any delta, so it is hard to judge what is needed)

But sorry that I try to get proper information out there, and ask how we should improve things for makers. Guess I’ll just shut my evil mouth and go back to our own little dark corner in which to develop the future of Cura. After all, you all so appreciated that when we did that for the 2.1 and 2.2 versions.

@Daid_Braam I think he might be referring to @Thomas_Sanladerer when he’s talking about the video producing mod. He hasn’t been here long enough to understand that Tom’s videos got started specifically FROM this community. Those videos are literally an extension of this community. I guess Tom defended you at some point and he’s mad about that.

I’m not mad/sad/[insert emotion here]. Fact is, Cura did not support other printers easily during 2.1 and 2.2. It definitely hurt those of us who had suggested Cura to people, or who were using Cura already on machines. Sure, you can NOW – but it was enough of a time frame between those releases and this latest one that people got frustrated.

Cura certainly supports it now, which I’m appreciative of. But that timeframe where it didn’t was enough to drive me away from it.
